Ranting...

Okay this is my pet peeve... As an author I know how good you feel when you get a review on something you’ve written. Just to know that your muse was able invoke emotions in a reader that makes them feel compelled to comment on your work.

But it absolutely drives me crazy when authors ask for comments. I can even understand as a writer that sometime positive reinforcement and encouragement is enough to keep you pounding away at the keyboard. If someone is moved enough to leave a comment that’s great, but the story I’m reading right now (on Midnight Whispers) the author is practically begging for praise.

They use all caps and ask you to leave a comment before each chapter, and at the end of every chapter. To be honest it’s a real turn off. Maybe it’s just me, but it borders on desperation. Sure I wish I received more comments. But when I do get them I really appreciate them, because I feel like my audience leaves them because they’re heartfelt, not required. Did I mention that said author, doesn’t reply to their comments… Really?

Okay I’m done bitching…

No you are not bitching. I know what you are talking about and it turns me off. I noticed that they don't response to comments either. How dare them beg and not return a nice response. They certainly spend enough energy begging for comments.

I know the feeling, it annoys me when I see that too. Granted I've not been able to write much of anything fic wise in a while, but still.

Which fic is it that you're reading? XD

My turn my turn. I'm with rulisteningbj.

Don't ask me to take the time to comment on your story if you can't take the time to respond. A thank you goes a long way.
Do you feel like you don't have to respond because YOU took the time to write and post the chapter? We the readers don't have to comment yet WE  took the time to read it.

There, I'm done. Love to vent.

I agree with everyone. I do a lot of reading. I do leave comments if they reply back but if they don't like [livejournal.com profile] predec2 said then I don't write anymore comments. I like MW and AO3 because if I don't get a lot of comments then I look at the amount of people who have read it. This is what makes me write. Besides, Kathleen, you are allowed to BITCH anytime. That's what friends are for.

I read a ton of fanfic and don't comment as much as I'd like…so I feel bad when I don't. But its good to know that most of the talented writers don't take offense at the lack of comments. Please know that I appreciate you all so much.

I agree with everyone here. Comments are always such a joy (and even the simple act of leaving kudos on AO3 says so much, and it's so good to receive the notification email for them) but to ask for them it's not something I could ever see myself doing. There's also people who come out and simply tell you that if you don't leave a review on their story chances are they won't write any more chapters to it and that is wrong on so many levels!

Even worse is when people don't even take the time to answer said comments. It doesn't really seem fair to only receive and never even attempt to give back... and besides, what good is it to get a comment and not engage with the person who took the time not only to read your work but to leave something on it? Sharing is half the fun!
