Ranting...

Okay this is my pet peeve... As an author I know how good you feel when you get a review on something you’ve written. Just to know that your muse was able invoke emotions in a reader that makes them feel compelled to comment on your work.

But it absolutely drives me crazy when authors ask for comments. I can even understand as a writer that sometime positive reinforcement and encouragement is enough to keep you pounding away at the keyboard. If someone is moved enough to leave a comment that’s great, but the story I’m reading right now (on Midnight Whispers) the author is practically begging for praise.

They use all caps and ask you to leave a comment before each chapter, and at the end of every chapter. To be honest it’s a real turn off. Maybe it’s just me, but it borders on desperation. Sure I wish I received more comments. But when I do get them I really appreciate them, because I feel like my audience leaves them because they’re heartfelt, not required. Did I mention that said author, doesn’t reply to their comments… Really?

Okay I’m done bitching…

No you are not bitching. I know what you are talking about and it turns me off. I noticed that they don't response to comments either. How dare them beg and not return a nice response. They certainly spend enough energy begging for comments.

I know, really... I'm glad it not just me, and the thing is the fics okay, but it not really anything special.

I checked to see if they were new to writing and posting, because I remember when I first started writing I was very insecure. But this author has ten fics posted... Shakes head...

Okay now onto the fun stuff... I receive you as my giftie for the Chocolate ~ Ugot-Mail challenge. It's all boxed up and ready to go, I'll be mailing on Monday. And since your just one state over, and not in Germany or Ireland you should actually receive it next week... I hope you like your presents...

Hugs Darling ~ Kathleen

And of course thanks for commenting... He, he, he...

Oh my God, I love your Real Men Wear Pink! Looking forward to my package. This is my first time to do this. I have dunderklumpen and I don't know anything about her. I kind of wanted to make it a little personal and sent her a PM asking her a little about herself. No response. I will wing it.
And of course thanks for commenting, you are so funny!

Feel free to snag the icon, I don't remember who I stole it from... My bad...

One thing I can tell you about Britt-Marie is that when she's sent my packages, she usually sends me gummy-bears or gummy-sours, or Gummy-fruit-chews... So she likes the Gummies... And she sent me a scarf twice, I usually send thing that I like.

One thing to keep in mind, how much will it weight? It usually costs me twice as much to mail it (overseas) as the stuff I'm mailing... So don't be shocked.

One package I sent Vonnie was full of summertime toys, beach-ball, squirt-gun, bubbles, pin-wheel. I'm a big fan of the dollar store...

I know the feeling, it annoys me when I see that too. Granted I've not been able to write much of anything fic wise in a while, but still.

Which fic is it that you're reading? XD

Now you know which fic I'm talking about... He, he, he...

It's the fractured fairy-tales series... Remember I said I thought the titles were goofy... I mean the fics are okay, but... I've made it to Little-Red-Riding-Hood but its too much, or not enough... I don't know...

Okay like I said I'll stop bitching...

My turn my turn. I'm with rulisteningbj.

Don't ask me to take the time to comment on your story if you can't take the time to respond. A thank you goes a long way.
Do you feel like you don't have to respond because YOU took the time to write and post the chapter? We the readers don't have to comment yet WE  took the time to read it.

There, I'm done. Love to vent.

From a writer's standpoint and a reader's, totally agree with you. If someone takes the time to comment, they deserve a response. And if I review a story, and don't get a response, that is the last comment I leave for them.

I know it just seem like common courtesy to respond when someone's taken the time to comment.

The only time I don't respond, is when I really don't know how to react to someone's comment. Instead of letting my negative or defense side surface, I simply don't respond.

It's good to know I'm not the only one that feels this way...

Here here! So well said... Most of us writers, write because we have a story inside that needs to be written... Not for comments, or praise...

Most readers, read because they enjoy the fics and the characters, and the journey the writer takes them on...

I'm always so honored when fangirls respond, but I never expect it... I write for me, for a long time I never even posted. Like I said I was insecure, and shy...

I know, I know, you can get off the floor from laughing now. But it's true, once upon a time I was very shy about my writing...

I love to hear others vent, it makes me feel normal and not like I'm some crazy fangirl...

I agree with everyone. I do a lot of reading. I do leave comments if they reply back but if they don't like [livejournal.com profile] predec2 said then I don't write anymore comments. I like MW and AO3 because if I don't get a lot of comments then I look at the amount of people who have read it. This is what makes me write. Besides, Kathleen, you are allowed to BITCH anytime. That's what friends are for.

Thanks Hon,

I love having such good friends, and support. I really like that feature too, it gives me that support that keeps me writing. There's a place on livejournal where you can see how many views you've had each day, but a count per story would be nice.

Hugs you back Darling ~ Kathleen

I read a ton of fanfic and don't comment as much as I'd like…so I feel bad when I don't. But its good to know that most of the talented writers don't take offense at the lack of comments. Please know that I appreciate you all so much.

Love, Deborah 💖

I love reading and writing fanfics, and I totally understand leaving and not leaving comments. I write for me first and foremost, so I never take offense. I understand sometimes you just don't feel motivated, or the fic just doesn't affect you that way. It's all good to me...

I agree with everyone here. Comments are always such a joy (and even the simple act of leaving kudos on AO3 says so much, and it's so good to receive the notification email for them) but to ask for them it's not something I could ever see myself doing. There's also people who come out and simply tell you that if you don't leave a review on their story chances are they won't write any more chapters to it and that is wrong on so many levels!

Even worse is when people don't even take the time to answer said comments. It doesn't really seem fair to only receive and never even attempt to give back... and besides, what good is it to get a comment and not engage with the person who took the time not only to read your work but to leave something on it? Sharing is half the fun!

Yes, I love getting my kudos from AO3 it just makes my day... It always help to keep you motivated when you receive comments, but also just knowing that the fics are being read counts almost as much. So yes, I love seeing the read count on Midnight Whispers, and the page views on livejournal.

But asking for compliments, Oops I mean comments... He, he, he...

Especially if you don't respond after they've left a comment is just rude... Like you and others have said, we took the time to read the fic, and comment, the least they can do is reply...

God it feels good to bitch sometimes... It's good to know I'm not alone...
