“Why was I here? Why did I come back? What did I expect? What am I going to do?” These were all questions that kept running through his mind as he threw caution to the wind and a few pairs of jeans, t-shirts and underwear into his bag. He couldn’t stay here watching Brian fuck everything that moved, treating him like the little housewife. He already moved out into a filthy studio to make his point; Brian made it perfectly clear he could care less, it was over.
He stood shivering and naked, smoking a cigarette, looking out into hazy morning sun as it came up over
Still early he heads to the diner to load up on carbs for his trip. Sitting at the counter, reading the newspaper he didn’t see Brian come in and sit at the booth to his right. But he could feel him, sense his presence; he always could tell when Brian was near. He shook his head to clear away his thoughts. He needed to focus on his future, not his past. Neither made any move to speak and Justin wonder if he should even say goodbye. Would he even care? When he stood to leave, Brian was already hitting on the new waiter, so that answered that question.
It was only a few blocks to the freeway and the cool air cleared his head of the images conjured up of Brian fucking the hot, new waiter. Sometimes Justin wondered if Deb hired them based on their looks. He stopped at his ATM and withdrew his daily maximum then headed towards Highway 79 South with no thought about his actual destination. Just some place warm, south. Some place far, far away…

He had been gone several weeks but everyone assumed that he was just avoiding all the regular haunts, so he wouldn’t have to see Brian. It was the day before the art show when Lindsay received an email from him explaining that he was out of town and wouldn’t be able to get back in time for the show. He missed the boring critic from Art Forum magazine who attended the opening, but he did see the cover with his painting on the front. When he read the article he couldn’t help noticing a photo of the crowd featuring Brian holding Gus as they viewed his artwork. He couldn’t help thinking that Brian looked a little sad and he wondered if he missed him at all.
Justin found he liked being independent and travelling on his own, although his mother would have a heart attack if she knew he was hitch hiking around the country. He seemed to be leaving a string of broken hearts in his wake, starting with the manager of the internet café where he sent Lindsay the email from. Next was the manager of the bookstore where he saw his painting on the cover of Art Forum; he continued travelling, staying in ‘Bed and Breakfasts’ just long enough to capture the local countryside and fanfare on canvas and then move on. He had also started visiting the local galleries, enjoying the local artist’s work or just the artist, as well as hooking up with gallery managers professionally and personally. Most were more than willing to hang his illustrations and send his commission check directly to his bank in
Eighteen Months Later…
Justin stood there in awe, just staring at Brian. He looked so beautiful in his designer suit, perfect in every way; just like all the decorations and flowers that screamed wealth and fine design that filled the church. It was everything he could ever have dreamed of for his wedding day and Brian looking so happy, so calm, so in love… There was just one problem with this scenario; the blond that stood next to Brian wasn’t him. The minister had just asked if anyone knew of any reason that these two should not be wed in Holy Matrimony and to please speak now or forever hold their peace…
Justin opened his mouth…
